How can foreigners renew their visas after marriage in China?

Foreigners can apply for a follow-up visa for marriage in China in the following ways:

1. Apply for a reunion residence certificate: According to relevant Chinese policies, Chinese citizens and foreign family members of foreigners with permanent residence qualifications in China can apply for residence in China for family reunion reasons.

2. Extension of visa: Foreign spouses of Chinese citizens can extend their visas for up to 3 months at a time, and can do so up to 3 times. If you continue to apply for an extension after staying for one year, you must also write a written application (housing, marriage, economic situation), which can be extended twice, with each extension not exceeding 6 months.

3. Application for aliens’ temporary residence permit: if an applicant still applies for extension after two years of stay, he or she can apply for aliens’ temporary residence permit after approval, which is valid for no more than one year. The temporary residence permit can be extended twice, each extension of no more than one year.

4. Application for permanent residence: Chinese citizens or spouses of foreigners who have obtained permanent residence qualification in China can apply for permanent residence if they have been married for five years, have continuously resided in China for five years, have stable living security and residence for at least nine months each year, abide by Chinese laws, and are healthy.

5. Renewal of Work related Residence Permit
Prerequisites: If foreigners want to work in China after marriage, they need to obtain a work permit before applying for a work type residence permit. Before the expiration of the residence permit, if there is still work and the relevant conditions are met, an application for renewal can be made.

After the applicant has prepared all the necessary documents, they will go to the local immigration department to submit their application. The immigration department will review the materials and may conduct on-site investigations or phone verifications to confirm the authenticity of the work situation. After the review is approved, the work residence permit will be renewed.
