Can foreigners bring their families with them on their first work visa in China?

When foreigners apply for a work visa for the first time in China, they can bring their families with them according to the relevant policies and regulations of China. Specifically, the family members of foreigners working in China can apply for Visa S and the corresponding residence permit. Visa S is divided into two types: S1 and S2. The S1 visa is applicable to the spouses, parents, children under the age of 18, parents of foreigners who stay in China for work, study and other reasons for long-term (more than 180 days) home visits, as well as those who need to stay in China for other personal matters; S2 visa is applicable to family members of foreigners who stay in China for work, study and other reasons for short-term (no more than 180 days) home visit.

When applying for an S-visa, family members need to provide materials including a valid passport, photo, work permit notice, invitation letter, copy of the company’s business license, proof of family relationship, etc. Therefore, when applying for a Chinese work visa for the first time, foreigners can indeed bring qualified family members and apply for corresponding visas and residence permits for them.
