When do foreigners need to cancel their residence permits?

The residence permit needs to be cancelled in the following situations:

Work related situation
Termination of employment contract: when the labor contract between the foreigner and the employer working in China expires and is not renewed, or the employment contract is terminated in advance, or the enterprise sends him to work in a subsidiary, the work permit and residence permit must be cancelled.
Change of work unit: if an alien changes his/her work unit and the new unit needs to apply for a new work permit and residence permit, the original unit shall cancel his/her original residence permit.

The situation of the residence permit itself
Failure to extend upon expiration of the validity period: after the expiration of the validity period of the alien’s residence permit, if the application for extension is not applied for or the application for extension is not approved, the residence permit will automatically become invalid and generally need to go through the cancellation procedures.
The certificate is revoked, withdrawn or revoked according to law: if an alien violates Chinese laws, regulations or relevant provisions, and his/her residence permit is revoked, withdrawn or revoked according to law, he/she must cancel it.

Personal situation
Exit settlement: When foreigners decide to leave China to settle in other countries, they need to cancel their residence permits.
Obtaining the right of permanent residence: If an alien has obtained the right of permanent residence in China, the original residence permit generally needs to be cancelled.
